PRICE PAID DIRECTLY TO RANDOLFO
With the collaboration of Semilla , we bought
this coffee directly from Randolfo at a price of $2.66USD/lbs. And thanks to the initiative
of Semilla , Randolfo was paid in advance to ensure he had the cash to pay his employees, which is a VERY RARE initiative in the industry,
who normally only pays once the coffee has arrived in the country.

To put this price into context, a grower in Guatemala would need to receive a minimum of $2.22USD/lbs to support himself and his family. If Randolfo had sold his coffee to the local cooperative, he would have received around $1.30USD/lbs. And the FairTrade price is currently between $1.40USD/lbs and 1.70USD/lbs .

    Info about this lot

    INDEPENDENCE AND CORRUPTION
Randolfo explains to us from the first moments we meet him in February 2020 that he only trusts very few people in his own country.
He says that as a small, autonomous and independent producer, and a member of the Colis Resistencia, he cannot receive any help from the government.
Anacafé , the Guatemalan association providing support to coffee producers, has openly declared that it no longer offers services to coffee producers from Mataquescuintla and member of the Colis Resistencia.

And that's without taking into account the corruption that reigns in the majority of these institutions, which enriches its leaders and the largest producers in the country, and impoverishes the small producers.
The history of Guatemalan coffee is besmirched by the indiscriminate support of European buyer farm ownership and the forced labor of indigenous people.

    RESISTENCE PACKAGE
In addition to this fight, Randolfo and many other producers in the region are leading a second one.
A mine located on their territory is operated by PanAmerican Silver, a Canadian company based in Vancouver. PanAmerican continues to exploit it without the clear consent of the community.
Since the purchase of the mine by the Canadian company in 2011, the number of direct attacks on members of the peaceful resistance Colis Resistencia has exploded and continues to increase. However, PanAmerican Silver denies involvement in its attacks and continues to operate illegally.

    HOPE AND MATURATION
Despite everything, Randolfo keeps the moral. He focuses on the bright side, including his direct relationship with us and his other buyers.
By constantly communicating with him, he explains to us that he remains hopeful, that he trusts us. He also tells us that the current harvest is going wonderfully and that the cool weather this year is helping to slow down the ripening, which is excellent for the complexity of a coffee.
